Assembly suspends local council chairman over alleged corruption, misconduct

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended, the chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council Theresa Ushie, for three months over allegations of misconduct and corrupt practices.

Penpushing reports the lawmakers made the declaration on the matter on Tuesday after considering a resolution passed by the Bekwarra Local Government Legislative Council, and equally set up a committee to investigate the allegations against the chairman.

The Speaker Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem, speaking on the matter during debate said the suspension was in accordance with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025, explaining that the Vice Chairman Egbung Odama, would run the council affairs in acting capacity.

Penpushing further reports that Ayambem urged the panel to be fair and thorough in investigating the allegations against the chairperson, while as at the time of this report, the suspended council boss declined comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, the councillors had earlier about three months ago attempted to impeach the chairman, citing allegations of corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power.
