APC Lagos Chairmanship Primaries and the Hypocrisy of Selective Outrage

As a concerned Nigerian, I find it necessary to speak on the unfolding controversies surrounding the APC chairmanship primaries in Lagos State. What we are witnessing is not just an internal party dispute—it is a reflection of a deeper problem in our political culture.
It is both hypocritical and intellectually dishonest for loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to suddenly cry foul over electoral malpractice during their party’s primaries when many of them have in the past cheered or justified similar irregularities during general elections. This selective outrage undermines any claim to true democratic principles.
A commitment to democratic values must be consistent. We cannot celebrate flawed processes when they favour us and then denounce them only when they no longer serve our interests. If we truly desire a credible and functional democracy, then integrity must begin from within—starting with how parties conduct their own affairs.
Loyalty to a political party should never come at the expense of national interest. True patriotism lies in holding all institutions, including our preferred political parties, accountable. The fight for electoral transparency should not be seasonal or conditional. It must be a constant pursuit, no matter whose ox is gored.
One day, we will get it right—but only if we are willing to confront the truth, even when it’s inconvenient. Only your loyalty to Nigeria is patriotism—not the one you have for your party.
