Angry mob lynches two police operatives

Two police operatives said to be escorting a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Emmanuel Agbaje, have been lynched in Ikpeshi, a community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

Penpushing reports that trouble started with the police operatives when a vehicle in the convoy of the former lawmaker hit and killed a commercial motorcycle rider, a development which angered some of the youths

The source explained that the operatives, who were in a Toyota Hilux truck, were later taken to the Edo State Security Volunteer Network, a vigilante group, while some angry youths reportedly invaded the security facility where the police operatives were taken to, overran the facility.

Penpushing further reports that the aggrieved youths allegedly lynched the two operatives, and were said to have equally attacked the vigilante facility and destroyed their furniture while threatening to deal with their members who tried to rescue the police officers.

The members of the vigilante group, however, were able to rescue two other police operatives who are reportedly receiving treatment in Ifejola Hospital Igarra, while some rifles belonging to the operatives were also recovered.

Penpushing also reports that Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police confirmed the incident, but as at the time of filing this report was yet to give details of the incident

The Chairperson of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state, Tajudeen Alade, while reacting condemned the attack by the youths, assuring that those involved would be prosecuted and promised to support the twin sister of one of the victims of the accident.
