
Amosun mourns Okupe
The Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep sadness, over the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a renowned politician and former presidential spokesperson, who died on Friday, 7 March, 2025, at the age of 72.
Penpushing reports that Amosun in a statement by his media office, described the deceased as an illustrious son of Iperu, Ogun State, whose foray into politics came into prominence as National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the run up to the June 12, 1993 elections.
The statement made available by Lanre Akinwale to journalists stated that the late medical doctor went on to have a rich, distinguished and purposeful career as a politician, who equally made great impact as official spokesperson to two Nigerian Presidents – Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Penpushing further reports that Amosun recalled that Okupe was a Gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, and former Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign.
The statement stated that Okupe’s imprint remains indelible in the annals of the nation’s political journey, stressing that he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to whatever he believed in.
‘He was a brilliant, eloquent and articulate man with an impressionable character and courage right from his early days as a medical doctor to his times as a politician, values to which he remained committed till his last breath. For us in Ogun State, we have lost a fine citizen who made remarkable impact in diverse spheres of human endeavour’, Amosun wrote.
Penpushing also reports that the former Governor, while condoling with the Okupe family, particularly the widow and children, he left behind, prayed that the Almighty God will grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear his irreparable loss.
