A tribute to a living legend at 84 – High Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole (Caterpillar)

By Olalekan Shoyinka

At eighty-four, High Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole, fondly called Caterpillar, stands tall as a pillar of wisdom, culture, and statesmanship. As Oluwo Iporo, Apena Egba, and Life Patron of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN), Ogun State Chapter, his influence has been felt far beyond politics and traditional institutions—his life remains an embodiment of service, integrity, and humility.

My personal encounter with Chief Bankole remains unforgettable. Just weeks after the public presentation of my first book, “This Day in Abeokuta History (A Compendium of Daily Events in the History of Egbaland)”, he graciously extended his hand of encouragement. Following the generous reward of the late Olori Omooba Owu, Prince Abduljabar Bolasodun Adesumbo Ajibola, Chief Bankole again did the unexpected—making a cash donation for just a few copies he collected. It was not the amount, but the spirit behind the gesture: a statesman affirming the efforts of a young historian and cultural advocate.

Beyond that single event, Chief Bankole has consistently proven himself a father figure. Each time I reached out—whether for moral counsel, physical support, or guidance—he responded without hesitation. He speaks his mind without fear or favor, a quality that has earned him respect across divides and generations. To Egbaland, he is not merely a political titan but also a guardian of our traditions, a custodian of our shared heritage, and a bridge between the wisdom of the elders and the energy of the youth.

As we celebrate this milestone, we honor not only the years he has lived but the values he represents—truth, generosity, cultural pride, and unwavering commitment to community development. His name has become synonymous with forthrightness, a rare quality in today’s political and cultural landscape.

On behalf of myself, my family, and the members of the United Premier Movement (UPM), Abeokuta, I extend heartfelt congratulations and prayers:

  • May the Almighty bless you with renewed strength, vibrant health, and unending joy.
  • May your wisdom continue to light the path for future generations of Egbaland and Nigeria.
  • May your legacy inspire leaders to serve selflessly, with honor and dignity.

Happy 84th Birthday to a true son of Egbaland, a political colossus, and a cultural icon. Long may you reign in wisdom, High Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole – Caterpillar!
