50 year old man commits suicide in abia state
A 50-year-old man, identified as Chukwudi Maduka has allegedly committed suicide inside his one-room apartment at Umuezu-Ore Umuana village in the Uhuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
Penpushing reports that, a resident of the community, Dave Maduakor, said the man had earlier set his apartment on fire before hanging himself, using the ceiling fan in the room, adding that neighbours sensed danger when they noticed smoke coming out from his room.
The resident said when his door was forced opened his lifeless body was found dangling, stating that the incident was later reported to the Ehimiri Police Station, where some operatives were detailed to the scene.
“When they tried to open the door, they noticed that it was locked from inside so they forced it open and found Maduka’s body hanging on the fan. The landlord said when he wanted to speak with the man, who locked himself up in his room on Saturday, he told him that he was praying.”
Penpushing further reports that, Maduakor said the deceased was reported to have travelled to his village in Lokpanta in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia and returned to Umuana community on Friday.
The resident disclosed that, Chairman of the community, Ngozi Onwumere, alongside with the deceased landlord, consulted a group, known as “kamanu” that specialised in handling suicide cases, and brought down the corpse which was later deposited in the morgue.
Penpushing also reports that, the Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer,Geoffrey Ogbonna who confirmed the incident said the deceased did not leave suicide note, adding that investigation had commenced to unravel the ugly development.
Meanwhile, the deceased was said to be married to a teacher in a charity home at Ahieke community in Umuahia community but later separated with the wife as a result of their childless marriage.
