26 die in boat mishap in Niger state
A boat carrying over 100 persons between Jabba and Kainji dams in Mokwa local government area of Niger State, capsized in a river, leaving 26 dead, while 44 are still missing as at the time of filing this report.
Penpushing reports that the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Husseini confirmed the worrisome development, adding that the victims, who were from Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yankyade communities, were on the way to their farms located on the other side of the River Niger.
The Public Relations Officer, said the agency in collaboration with officials of the Mokwa Local Government supported by local divers are conducting a search, rescue, and recovery operation at the scene of the incident.
‘So far, 26 corpses have been recovered while over 30 have been rescued as the operation is ongoing. Over 100 persons are said to be on board the boat when the incident occurred”, the agency spokesperson said
Penpushing further reports that the Chairperson of Mokwa Local Government, Jibrin Muregi, also confirmed the incident, explaining that rescue operations were ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
