1,500 female athletes converge on Abeokuta to compete at 3rd edition of Ogun Women kilometer race
1,500 female athletes are to converge on Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital on Saturday December 7, 2024 to compete in the 3rd edition of Ogun Women Run 5kilometer road race, while the winners would be rewarded with cash prize.
Penpushing reports that Chief Executive Officer of Brussels Sports Management Limited, the organizers of the event, Seyi Johnson made this known at a press conference held at the secretariat of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) located at Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.
The sports company boss explained that the race is designed in in two categories for young runners and older runners of 60 and above, adding that the cash prize will attract of N500,000 for who emerge first, while N300,000 will be awarded second place and third will take home N200,000
Penpushing further reports that Johnson the older athletes will be rewarded with household items courtesy of Oluwalogbon Electronics, the co-sponsors of the race, adding that the race will commence with Wheel chair racing at 7;30 am.
The Chief Executive Officer of Brussels Sports Management Limited explained the competitive race will commence by 8:00 am, with take-off at Sapon and terminate at Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Kuto
Penpushing also reports that Johson disclosed that work was already in progress towards expansion of the race in subsequent editions to attract more participants, explaining that runners from outside Nigeria will be inclusive while the kilometer will increase to 10kilometre
The former Africa record holder in 100m and 200 m and Olympic bronze medalist Mary Onyali in her remarks expressed satisfaction with steady progress recorded by every edition of the race, with a pledge to use her high network of prominent individuals to enhance the status of the competition
Penpushing reports that Ambassador of the road race and ex-Olympiad commended the effort of Chief Executive Officer CEO of Brussels Sports Management Limited and Ogun State Government for the successes recorded in the two previous editions, and urged other states to emulate by organizing such competition to encourage more women participation in sports

Penpushing further reports that the Director-General of National Sports Commission (NSC), and former Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State Bukola Olopade, has confirmed his readiness to attend the third edition of the Ogun Women Run.
The Media aide, of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Kola Daniel made this known in a statement emphasizing the importance of the race, which he described as a significant platform to showcase the abundant sporting talents in Nigeria and one that supports women who are carving a pathway for themselves in sports.
‘It is pertinent to attend the 3rd edition of the Ogun Women Run, considering the pool of talents in we have in our nation and also the dire need to continue to support women in sports, as data has shown that the pathway has always been more difficult for females’, he wrote
‘Notwithstanding, casting our minds back to international competitions and events in recent times, our women have done the country proud in various sports, winning several medals and accolades. We need to continuously support them as this terrain is not easy, especially for them,” Olopade said.
Penpushing also reports that Olopade advised the organizers to ensure this year’s edition greatly inspires girls to push boundaries, promote healthy living, and contribute to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria.
