You cannot gag us reporting criminal activities, Nigerian media chiefs tell Buhari

The Nigerian Media Chiefs have declared that, they would not succumb to the President Muhammed led government directive that the media should not divulge “details” of the activities of bandits, herdsmen, terrorists and kidnappers in their reports.

Penpushing reports that, media leaders which include President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mustapha Isah; the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Chris Isiguzo; and the Executive Director, Centre for Media Law and Advocacy, Richard Akinnola; made the declaration

The Media Chiefs pointed out to the Buhari administration that the media reports activities and does not create events, and therefore advised Nigerian government to tackle the security challenges headlong in the country rather than chasing shadows.

Penpushing further reports that, they posited that, attempt by the government to gag the media through the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed is an aborted pregnancy, and an order that cannot see light of the day.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) it is recalled recently directed  that television and radio stations in Nigeria should not “glamourise the nefarious activities of insurgents” during their daily newspaper reviews.
