Women’s Consortium of Nigeria celebrates womanhood
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Women’s Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON) has joined the world to celebrate International Women’s Day, noting that from the 1800s to the early 1900’s, women activists fought hard for equality.
Penpushing reports that a statement by the organization pointed out that International Women’s Day scheduled for March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The statement added that, the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, lamenting that as at today some of the issues remain key priorities, even over a century later.
‘WOCON celebrates this special day, first by celebrating women everywhere in every nation and tongue. We recognise feminists, activities and community and rural women who fought and continue to fight for women’s cause’.
‘WOCON in its sustained effort has come a long way in its commitment to the enforcement of women’s rights and the attainment of equality, development and peace since its inception in 1995, and today, as we celebrate womanhood, we celebrate all women, both living and those who have passed on, who have fought and continue to fight hard for equality’.
Penpushing further reports that, the organization said the day is also used to celebrate life and time of the founder, Chief(Mrs) Bisi Olateru-Olagbegi, recalling her efforts towards ensuring relevance of women in all aspects of life
‘Today on IWD 2021, we remember and celebrate the life and times of our late Founder, Chief Mrs. Bisi O-O and her efforts till her last moments in rallying, protesting and lobbying hard for inclusion, influence and equality and ensuring that every girl and every woman’s voice was heard’.
‘We also celebrate women activities and feminists everywhere who continue to believe and strive for the dignity of the woman and some of their efforts have been acknowledged on our website’, the statement reads.
‘As we celebrate IWD2021, no doubt a lot of progress has been made, with stereotypes being challenged and diverse representation of women becoming more evident. In WOCON, we continue to work with, and see men and boys as allies, advocates and champions of change in accelerating women’s equality’.
‘As we join the whole world today to celebrate womanhood, let’s #Choosetochallenge assumptions, barriers, stereotypes, biases and prejudices against women and girls everywhere and let’s look out with hope for an equal world and an equal future for women and girls everywhere’, the statement emphasised.
