United Nations to create ecosystems for women entrepreneurs in 2025

The United Nations (UN) has disclosed plan to create ecosystems for women entrepreneurs in 2025 that would make them benefit and exploit the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement(ACFTA).

Penpushing reports that the United Nations (UN) Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS Ms. Beatrice Eyong made this known in her speech at the Realnews 12th anniversary lecture held in Lagos

The country representative who spoke on the theme, “Africa in World Shifting Geopolitics: Matters Arising on Demography, Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Resources”, emphasisied need for women to participate, lead and benefit from all governance systems and peace process

Penpushing further reports that Eyong who was the chairperson at the occasion added that in advancing access to markets and resources, the world body has implemented its flagship programme “BuyFromWomen” which leverages the use of technology to expand women’s access to markets for agricultural produce and provides access to information and resources

‘In 2025, we are planning to create ecosystems for women entrepreneurs that would make them benefit and exploit the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Women should participate, lead and benefit from all governance systems and peace processes’, she stated

Penpushing also reports that she explained that studies showed that peace negotiations without women and girls would not last up to 10 years, expressing optimism that with the full participation of women in peace processes, those processes will last for more than 10 years.

‘UN women’s mandate as the Global champion of gender equality positions us as critical stakeholders, contributing to delivering programmes, policies, and standards that uphold women’s human rights and ensure that every woman and girl lives up to her full potential’.

‘In the context of structural changes and our response to ensuring women and girls are positioned to participate and benefit, UN Women has pioneered several innovations. In response to climate shocks and sourcing for alternative and clean energy, UN Women has initiated a low-cost Bio-gas technology for rural women’.

‘Additionally, to advance economic empowerment, UN Women has implemented an affirmative procurement initiative to increase women’s participation in public and private procurement, challenging the norm that women cannot be effective in procurement spaces. These interventions are all powered by tech solutions’, Eyong added.

‘Additionally, we are working in Kaduna State under our Peace Building Fund to develop an application that links female victims of conflict to the providers of essential services. In recognition of the power of social media in influencing behavioural patterns, we are working with FCDO to harness this power to nudge young persons, especially young women to participate in politics, public life, and leadership’’, she disclosed.

Penpushing also reports that Eyong added that the United Nations (UN) Women remain committed to partnering with the government of Nigeria and the world in fostering economic empowerment, increasing decent job creation, and improving the contribution of women and youth to the development of the Nigerian economy.

Meanwhile, other highlights of the event was induction of some personalities into Realnews Hall of Fame, and they are Ms Beatrice Eyong, Ambassador (Prof) Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, Ms Hadiza Bala Usman, Dr Karim El Aynaoul and Engr Shehu Tijjani
