Armed robbers kill student of Babangida university

A gang of armed robbers on Monday killed a student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, an incident which occurred at a students’ lodge in the Ndakikpabu area of the town.

Penpushing reports that the victim identified as Jafar, was reportedly stabbed in the neck by the attackers around 2:30 a.m., was rushed to General Hospital in Lapai where he was later confirmed dead.

The sad incident, however, led to protest by the university students who blocked the Agaie–Lapai highway, as the demonstrators decried what they described as recurring insecurity around the university environment.

Penpushing further reports that the protesters lamented that the death of Jafar is one too many, stressing that they live in fear every night, and therefore called on the government and the school authorities to act immediately.

The Police Command Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun in a statement, said following the incident officers from the Lapai Police Division responded to distress calls but arrived after the attackers had fled the scene.

Penpushing also reports that Abiodun said the incident is being treated as a case of suspected armed robbery and culpable homicide, adding that the police deployed tactical teams to restore order and assure students and residents of enhanced security.

The police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been launched and that the Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate arrest of those behind the attack, but as at the time of filing this report the university is yet to issue an official statement.
