United Nations, Africa Development Initiative, Media Awareness for All Information Network to train journalists on migration reportage

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with Light-up Africa Development Initiative (LADI) and Media Awareness and Information for All Network (MAIN) are to engage journalists and stakeholders in training on migration reporting in Africa.

Penpushing reports that, the national stakeholders meeting is focused on good practices and action plan to support a diverse approach on migration reporting and particularly in Nigeria, as it has been indentified that migration issues have continued to jump to the top of the newsrooms.

The statement from the organizers said the two day training is scheduled between 18 and 19 May, 2022 at Ivy Hotels 13, Aromire Street off Adeniyi Jones Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos State, adding that, the participants would be looking at how these principles gain importance in migration contexts, giving guidance on specific issues such as terminology, recognising and representing the complexity of the issues being reported, and obtaining informed consent.

Penpushing further reports that, the workshop is with the financial support of Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, stressing that the overall objective of the workshop is to contribute to an informed migration decision-making through balanced and evidence-based reporting.

The workshop will propose an action plan to support a diverse approach on migration in Nigeria, noting that, basically, commitment to ethical coverage of migration is founded on four major principles of journalism: accuracy, independence, humanity and responsibility.

‘Migration issues have continued to jump to the top of the newsrooms in most of the media house in recent times, with journalists reporting the biggest mass movement of people around the world- Television screens, newspapers, and online media have been filled with stories about the appalling loss of lives and suffering of thousands of people escaping war and poverty’, the statement said.

‘There is no doubt that public opinion affects state approaches and, consequently, shapes decisions on a policy level. By reporting on migration issues, media has a vast influence on the formation of a broad image and perception of migrants, the public and migration itself’.

‘In the realm of reportage, there is need for a purposeful action on how to reinforce migration media reporting; by understanding migration terminology, underlining respect for human dignity, challenging hate speech, ensuring balanced coverage, promoting evidence- and fact-based reporting, and encouraging the inclusion of migrant voices’.
