Two Nigerians fingered in Canada over alleged $500,000 flight tickets fraud
A 44 year old Nigerian lady, Gbemisola Akinrinade and a collaborator Adebowale Adiatu have been fingered by the Canadian Police over alleged sale of valid flight tickets valued at $500,000 to unsuspecting customers and collected the payments to benefit themselves financially.
Penpushing reports that the duo residents of Brampton and Vaughan respectively were identified by Peel Regional Police 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau in collaboration with the Fraud Bureau, having allegedly misrepresented themselves as working for travel agencies based out of the United Kingdom to obtain access to a secure online booking portal belonging to a major European airline.
The Peel Regional Police in a press release on January 26, 2023 said more than 250 airline tickets were fraudulently issued and sold at a value of more than $500, 000, adding that the majority of the customers who purchased the tickets were from the Calgary area and the flights were primarily to Africa.
Penpushing further reports that the suspects are facing charges which include fraud over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of property obtained by crime and obtain by false pretense, unlawful use of a computer.
The police authorities explained that in many fraud related cases, people in vulnerable situations are coerced, manipulated and taken advantage of for the profit of the fraudster, and however, urged individuals to properly source the website they are dealing with and verify legitimacy.
