The Russia–Ukraine War: Global Reverberations and Africa’s Strategic Awakening

On Wednesday, 13th August 2025, I shared my reflections on the Russia–Ukraine war during a live segment of International Desk, a prominent program on Ogun State Television (OGTV) hosted by the esteemed Mojísọlá Solaja. This moment allowed me to contribute to a vital national conversation about the war and its far-reaching implications for both Africa and the global community.

As the conflict enters its third year, we stand at a pivotal crossroads marked by faltering diplomacy, the rise of digital warfare, and economic instability. In this challenging landscape, Africa must rise, refusing to be a mere bystander. Our continent must acknowledge and leverage its strategic significance, embody moral leadership, and embrace its digital potential.

An Endless Conflict—Lacking Insight and Resolution

The conflict is deeply entrenched. Russia relentlessly advances its aggression in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine, steadfastly supported by its Western allies, categorically refuses to cede any territory. The prospect of a contentious Trump–Putin summit in Alaska has ignited intense global debate, particularly regarding the notion of land swaps, which Ukraine firmly denounces. This war transcends mere borders; it fundamentally threatens the future of global order.

Global Shockwaves: Energy, Economy, and Cyber Frontiers

The ongoing conflict has significantly altered global alliances and revealed weaknesses in energy and food systems. Europe, in particular, is grappling with energy insecurity as a result of disrupted gas supplies from Russia. This situation has contributed to increasing inflation rates around the world, and the hikes in interest rates are putting additional economic pressure on developing nations.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has evolved into a significant digital arena, where cyber warfare plays a crucial role. Russia has strategically used disinformation, aimed at critical infrastructure, and attempted to undermine morale. In retaliation, Ukraine has harnessed AI-driven defence systems and developed a resilient decentralized digital infrastructure. This situation highlights that the battle extends beyond traditional military confrontations; it is fundamentally a battle in the digital realm.

Africa’s Indirect Wounds

Despite Africa’s geographic distance from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the repercussions are profoundly significant. The war has led to increased food insecurity across the continent, particularly in countries like Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia, which are heavily reliant on wheat imports—over 30% of which comes from the affected regions. Additionally, the conflict has caused a dramatic surge in fertilizer prices, exceeding 55%, thereby jeopardizing agricultural productivity. Economic instability is also a concern, as currency depreciation and capital flight have placed considerable strain on national budgets throughout the continent.

Nigeria, although resilient, needs to take decisive actions to secure its future. This includes diversifying food and energy sources, enhancing digital infrastructure, and protecting the economy from external shocks. By addressing these key areas, the nation can strengthen its stability and growth prospects.

Cybersecurity: Africa’s New Battlefield

As Nigeria’s pioneering Professor of Cybersecurity and Information Technology Management, I firmly believe that in today’s interconnected world, robust digital defense measures have evolved from a mere option to a critical necessity for survival. The threats posed by cybercrime and malicious attacks are not just technical challenges; they represent real and pressing dangers to national security, economic stability, and the very sovereignty of African nations.

To safeguard our future, Africa must prioritize substantial investments in cybersecurity education, fostering a new generation of skilled professionals who are equipped to navigate and mitigate these risks. Furthermore, we need to develop and enhance our digital infrastructure, ensuring it is resilient against external threats. This encompasses not only technological upgrades but also the establishment of comprehensive policies that govern cyber activities and promote ethical practices in the digital space.

It is imperative that we construct firewalls that do not solely protect our data but also reinforce our sovereignty as nations. By creating a secure digital environment, we can empower our communities, businesses, and governments, ensuring they can thrive in an age where information is both a valuable asset and a potential target. Together, we must take decisive action to strengthen our defenses, fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness and resilience across the continent.

Leadership Lessons for Africa

The ongoing conflict brings to light critical lessons for Africa. First, the need for strategic autonomy is paramount; reducing reliance on external powers is essential for the continent’s independence. Second, the fragmented response from Europe underscores the importance of unity, showcasing that collaboration can prevent costly delays and missteps. Lastly, proactive diplomacy is crucial, with regional organizations like ECOWAS and the African Union stepping up to lead with both clarity and courage. Africa must take the initiative to establish its own place in global discussions, rather than waiting for an invitation.

Pathways to Peace: Africa’s Moral Voice

Achieving peace is certainly within our reach, but it is essential that this peace is founded on principled values. Any resolution that ultimately rewards acts of aggression risks establishing a perilous precedent that could undermine stability in the long term. Africa, given its rich history of reconciliation and profound spiritual traditions, possesses the potential to serve as a moral compass for the world in navigating these challenges.

Nigeria, recognized as a pivotal regional power, has a vital role to play in this context. It should not only advocate for resolutions that uphold justice and equity but also actively support humanitarian efforts spearheaded by organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU). By doing so, Nigeria can help foster an environment where true reconciliation is achieved and where the voices of those affected by conflict are heard and prioritized. This commitment to principled peace will not only benefit the continent but also set an example for global efforts toward sustainable conflict resolution.

A Call to Vision

In my role as a spiritual leader, I want to underscore the critical importance of having a clear and compelling vision, especially as we navigate the complex challenges of our contemporary world. I call upon the people of Africa to rise above fear, embracing instead a sense of faith, strategic planning, and collective unity.

Our youth hold immense potential and serve as the backbone of our future; it is vital that we invest in their empowerment, providing them with the tools, education, and opportunities they need to thrive. Additionally, we must focus on building resilient systems that can withstand the pressures of change and adversity, ensuring a stable and hopeful environment for generations to come.

In these turbulent times, promoting peace is essential. Even amidst chaos, we must nurture a culture of dialogue and understanding, which will enable us to bridge divides and work together for the common good.

The true strength of a nation extends far beyond its military might; it is rooted in a shared vision, enduring values, and a powerful, authentic voice. When a nation boldly articulates a vision that encapsulates its aspirations and principles, it galvanizes a deep sense of belonging and purpose among its people, propelling them towards collective progress and resilience. Nigeria is poised to become a formidable symbol of wisdom and courage on the African continent. As one of Africa’s largest and most diverse nations, it stands at a pivotal moment in its history. Now is the time for Africa to recognize and embrace its responsibility to uphold principles anchored in justice, innovative thinking, and an unwavering spirit of hope.

By championing collaboration and understanding among its nations, Africa can forge a path toward sustainable development and social progress, drawing upon the rich cultural heritage and abundant resources each country possesses.

In this spirit, I extend my heartfelt blessings to Nigeria and to all of Africa, declaring a resolute wish for prosperity, unity, and a future that embodies the strength and potential of its people. Together, they will inspire a brighter tomorrow.
