Terrorists blow up bridge in Niger State
Suspected terrorists have reportedly blown up a bridge linking many communities and markets along the Wawa-Luma-Guffanti road in Niger State with an explosive device.
Penpushing reports that the suspects believe to be members of Boko Haram under the command of Mallam Sadiku allegedly carried out the operations on Sunday evening, while sources said the incident and its timing showed that the terrorists are determined to cripple local economies.
The sources added that it happened just a day before Babanna market, while a commercial driver conveying traders to Babana on Monday morning said the road had been totally cut off as at the time of the incident
Penpushing further reports that the commercial driver stated that no car could pass through the road because it was cut into two, adding that only those riding motorcycles were manoeuvring through the debris under the bridge
The tiny, quiet road passes through the Kainji Lake National Park, where two jihadi groups—Ansaru or Mamuda, and Boko Haram—have established bases, just as a resident of New Bussa, the headquarters of Borgu local government posted a video of the damaged bridge on his Facebook handle
Penpushing also reports that the resident explained that the incident was another attempt to impoverish locals, pointed out that 90 per cent of all major markets in the area are accessed through the road
The resident stated that the road also leads to Kebbi State and Kontagora through the River Niger, and equally links Babanna and the Benin Republic.
