Stakeholders urge media, security operatives to be on same page on information dissemination

Stakeholders have called on both media and security operatives on need to strengthen their watchdog role by reporting insecurity with accuracy, and restraint from information that may cause more havoc in the country.

Penpushing reports that guests’ analysts at the Ogun State Television (OGTV) live programe titled, Democratic Path’, Prince Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji and Dr Folorunsho Ogunmefun made the call.

The duo, a journalist who is founder of Penpushing Media and lecturer at the Christland University Abeokuta, respectively emphasized that careless reportage on insecurity undermines national unity and can worsen existing security challenges in the country

Penpushing further reports that the analysts,warned a report that would boost ego of criminals should be avoided, and need to equally avoid sensational headlines or stories that inflame ethnic or political tensions.

They also emphasized on need for both media and security operatives to be on same page when dishing out information, stressing that national interest of the country should be considered as paramount

Penpushing reports that the stakeholders said government should be held accountable for security of the country, while citizens on their part must support government towards eradicating crimes

The analysts agreed that unverified reports have the potential to widen divisions and provoke fear, hence, need for scrutiny which must be built on verified information, expressing concern over the increasing spread of misinformation online.

Penpushing also reports that the duo lamented that digital platforms have made it easy for false news to circulate widely before being corrected, stressing that the public should also be cautious of information released out particularly from unverified source
