Segun Showunmi launches south-west pressure group, ’The Alternative’ ahead of 2027 poll

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Otunba Segun Showunmi on Thursday formally launched a pressure group known as “The Alternative,” aimed to educate citizens, engage political actors, and advocate for credible elections.

Penpushing reports that movement which focus avenue to secure the future of Nigerians by voting for the right candidates in the forthcoming 2027 general elections was launched in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital and attracted number of political actors across the country

The convener of the movement who was a former spokesman to Atiku Abubakar, while speaking warned Nigerians against recycling politicians who have failed to deliver meaningful leadership over the years.

Penpushing further reports that Showunmi at the town hall meeting, however, pointed out that the growing trend of bringing back the same set of leaders who have occupied Nigeria’s political space for over three decades was uncalled for

The known fearless politician kicked against what he described as constant recycling of old political actors, explaining that it was one of the reasons while the country has not been genuinely transformed for better.

Penpushing also reports that he said many of the so-called leaders have failed to initiate any new ideas or commitment to genuine development, emphasisng that this cannot continue in the interest of the positive growth of Nigeria

“We cannot continue this dangerous pattern of recycling leaders who have failed the people time and again. The result is clear, Nigeria remains stuck, and our democracy has become more about personalities than values’, he stated.

Penpushing reports that Showunmi frowned at how politicians exploit religion to divide the population and fond of manipulating the system to stay in power, pointing out that ironically the opposition parties have been weakened.

The Egba born politician lamented that those elected to challenge the government lack the courage to speak truth to power, however, explained that the movement is not evolving into a political party but is working to educate citizens on need to choose rightful leaders.

Penpushing further reports that he equally blamed money politics and vote buying for deepening the country’s leadership crisis, declaring that not until Nigerians imbibe culture of rejecting candidates with questionable wealth and recycled records, true development will remain elusive.

The political opposition leader in the same vein, criticized the concept of coalition politics in Nigeria arguing that stable political parties are essential for development and continuity, highlighting the need for a new approach and alternative leadership.

Penpushing also reports that he pointed out issues such as lack of accountability, transparency, corruption, mismanagement, ethnic regional tensions, poor leadership and decision-making, as set back of development.

The movement convener emphasizing the importance of stability, development, and democracy for a change in approach and mindset, and promoting the idea of an alternative that prioritizes the best interests of Nigerians.

Penpushing reports that National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, in his contributions called on aged politicians to retire from active politics and stop recycling themselves to return to power.

The known ubiquitous politician lamented that Nigeria is a country where politicians don’t lose and walk away, rather, they would force their way to return over personal ambition, adding that the result has always been suffering consequences for the innocent citizens

Penpushing further reports that he emphasized the need for a new alternative in Nigeria’s politics, calling for a shift in focus towards supporting the best candidates for the 2027 elections.

The Labour Party (LP) National Scribe called for collective action to salvage the country and move forward particularly for ordinary Nigerians seeking a better life, and equally advocated for liberation of natural resources.

Penpushing also reports that one of the founding leaders of the movement, Adai Edwin Adai, while addressing the meeting called for unity among Nigerians to choose credible leaders who will prioritise the people’s welfare over personal ambitions.
