Rivers state crisis: Resignation galore hits Governor Fubara’s administration
The Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara has lost more members of his cabinet which include his Chief of Staff among others, all of them said to have resigned barely few days after the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Zacchaeus Adangor resigned his appointment.
Penpushing reports that sources revealed that the mass resignation of the cabinet members put at nine as at the time of filing this report was traced to political tussle between the Governor and his predecessor Nyesom Wike who is now a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The sources added that the eight-month-old government of Fubara has continued to witness series of political crisis, stating that all the cabinet members who have left Fubara’s cabinet are said to be loyal to Wike.
Penpushing also reports that the sources stated that the unprecedented cabinet members resignation was aimed to weaken Fubara and create credibility crisis for him following the power tussle between him and Wike.
The Rivers State Government as at the time of filing this report was yet to publicly react to the resignations, while it is on record that the political crisis in state has divided the lawmakers at the House of Assembly.
Penpushing reports that 27 lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of which Fubara is a member, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), had their seats declared vacant by a factional Speaker who is loyal to the Governor.
The Rivers State House of Assembly as it is, is run by only four out of 31 members, while the four lawmakers are loyal to Fubara while the 27 are loyalists of the former Governor Nelson Wike, and on Wednesday, while Fubara was presenting the state’s 2024 budget proposal to the four-member House of Assembly, the state government was demolishing the House of Assembly Complex.
Penpushing further reports that the government said it decided to demolish the complex because the integrity of the building had been compromised after an explosion and fire incident which occurred in October during an attempt by some lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, while some people believe the action is to foreclose the 27 lawmakers from holding plenary.
