Rivers state attorney general resigns amidst political crisis

The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,Prof  Zacchaeus Adangor, has resigned his appointment from office explaining that his resignation  letter dated November 14,2023 was based on personal principles.

Penpushing reports that Adangor in the letter addressed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, thanked him for the opportunity and privileges granted him to serve in his administration as a member of the cabinet, adding that he is indebted to him

‘I wish to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity and privileges granted me to serve in your administration as a member of the cabinet. My family and I are indebted to Your Excellency in gratitude’, Adangor wrote.

Penpushing further reports that the former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice stated that the resignation took effect from the date of the letter – 14 November – which is a month before it came to public knowledge on Thursday.

The state government as at the time of filing this report was yet to make any official statement on the development, while it is still unclear if the date on the letter is a slip, or that the commissioner has since left office.

Penpushing also reports that sources said It was possible that he(Adangor)  chose to backdate his resignation, and in same vein a top official in the state who preferred anonymity because of the political enmity in the state confirmed the development.

The former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is one of the cabinet members who served in the immediate past administration of Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Penpushing reports that Adangor’s resignation is allegedly linked to the lingering power tussle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor Wike, while he is believed to be a loyalist of Nyesom Wike who is locked in a political tussle with Governor Fubara.

The former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is the first cabinet member to resign from office since the political crisis between Messrs Wike and Fubara became public in late October,and it  not clear if other loyalists of  Wike serving as commissioners  Fubara’s cabinet will also resign.

Penpushing further reports that it is on record that Rivers State House of Assembly has been enmeshed in crisis since late October following an impeachment plot against Governor Fubara by some lawmakers loyal to Wike.

The assembly has split into two factions – Martin Amaewhule is the speaker of the 27 members who are backed by Wike while Edison Ehie is the Speaker of the faction loyal to Governor Fubara,while both factions have held parallel sittings but the crisis took a new dimension on Monday after Wike-backed faction announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Penpushing also reports Ehie’s faction, following day, obtained a court order to conduct legislative business without interference from the rival faction, with the court order the faction on Wednesday met and declared vacant the seats of his 27 colleagues who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
