RECRUITMENT OF AMOTEKUN OFFICIALS TO COMMENCE SOON

The recruitment of officials of the South West regional security outfit known as  Amotekun  may soon commence and this will take place after the legal backing is in place, a source said at the end of the meeting of the of the Attorneys General from the zone.

Penpushing reports that, the meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital on Thursday was the outcome from the Governors of the South West earlier meeting with the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in Abuja to determine the nature of the legal framework for the security outfit.

The source disclosed that some States had already fine-tuned the processes of recruitment before the controversial declaration by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, announcing that the outfit was illegal.

Penpushing further reports that, meeting which was hosted by the Oyo State Commissioner for Justice, Oyewole Oyewo, constituted a three-member committee to provide a legal working document for the States.

The Chief Press Secretary to  Osun State Governor, Ismail Omipidan, however, disclosed that another meeting has been scheduled for the next two weeks in Ibadan where further resolutions would be made on the matter.

Penpushing also gathered from source  that the Attorney’s general would in the next meeting seek the inputs of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission before final preparation of  the necessary documents for onward transfer to the Houses of Assembly of each of the States.

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Muyiwa Olumilua, in response also confirmed that all procedures on the implementation of the Amotekun project would wait until the legal backing was in place.

“You are aware that the Governors just had a meeting with the Vice President and the Attorney General of the Federation regarding the security outfit. The fall out of that meeting is for us to try to put the necessary legal framework in place. That one will come before the recruitment process”, he explained

The Information Commissioner was however not specific the time frame it would take state  to conclude the legal framework, but encouraged  citizens to be patient with assurance that  the state government’s attempt to produce a well-designed framework is real.

Penpushing further reports that, Speakers of the Houses of Assembly of the States, also met with the Attorneys-General of the States, and promised to give speedy consideration to the bill when presented for enactment.

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission has also assured that it would soon come out with the standard operating procedures for the States to implement, while it is recalled that, the South West Governors officially launched Amotekun on January 9 and many Amotekun branded vehicles donated by the States have been assembled for deployments..
