Federal medical centre performs first living-donor kidney transplant

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has successfully performed its first living-donor kidney transplant, conducted on May 6, 2025 which was performed on a 69-year-old male Nigerian.

Penpushing report that this was made known in a statement by the hospital management on Friday in Abuja, while patient was said to have suffered from end-stage renal disease, a condition where the kidneys lose the ability to function.

The statement added that the donor is a healthy 39-year-old who is a close relative of the patient and donated one of his kidneys to the recipient, allowing for a life-saving transplant.

Penpushing further reports that the medical team led by Ernest Aniede, consisting of in-house qualified surgeons, nephrologists, and other medical and non-medical professionals, worked diligently to ensure the successful outcome of the procedure.

The statement added that the Medical Director, Dr Saad Ahmed, during his visit to the patient and the donor in the ward after the procedure, commended the patient and donor for their trust in the hospital’s services.

Penpushing also reports that in same vein, he commended the medical team for a successful surgery, pointing out that it was a major milestone for the hospital and a positive sign for the healthcare landscape in Nigeria

Penpushing further reports that Ahmed added that the president’s vision and dedication has led to significant progress in strengthening the healthcare system, especially in expanding access to dialysis, increasing funding for kidney disease research, and enhancing training for healthcare professionals.

The donor and patient in their responses expressed appreciation to the hospital management and staff for the professionalism and dedication they demonstrated before, during, and after the procedure.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report the hospital authority in the statement boasted that the patient and donor have recovered fully and are awaiting discharge.
