Owu women embark on vocational training to fight poverty
The female wing of royal union of Owu people under the aegis of Owu Women League on Tuesday initiated vocational trainings that would enhance series of skilled acquisition to sustain structured elimination of poverty in the group.
Penpushing reports that the league, has in the last three years, under the leadership of the Faderera of Owu Kingdom, Dr Chief(Mrs) Jolaoluwa Opaleye embarked on training and production of house-keeping materials of various categories, small-scale branding and packaging of preserved farm products including ‘Ofada rice’ vegetables, toiletries and detergents
The women league has established for itself, a pinnacle of self-empowerment scheme, while the tie and dye of fabrics, a commercial activity synonymous with the ambience of Abeokuta, is the theme of the current three-day programme which began at the Olowu’s Palace, Abeokuta on Monday.
Penpushing further reports that, the training was under the tutorship of a renowned senior lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB), Abeokuta, Dr. Mrs Olufunmilayo Olasunbo Brades.
The lectures and practical include: garment construction, pattern drafting, principles and techniques in textile and textile production among others.
Penpushing also reports that Towulade Akinale, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye while addressing the participants, drawn from various Owu towns and villages across the South West states of Nigeria,admonished women to tighten up their loins in readiness to surmount the challenges inherent in the current hardship in Nigeria and ready for creativity and reinvention among strategies for survival.
The royal father commended the leadership of the Owu women league for their doggedness to fight poverty by exposing their members to innovation that can sustain their drive to survive.
Penpushing reports that, Ogunleye added that he was already working with a Bee-keeping body in Ogun State with a view to sponsoring the women for training in the bee-keeping business.
The dignitaries at the event include: Chief (Mrs). Bola Obasanjo(wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo), Olori Bosun Dosunmu, (Olori Olowu, and, Gen. Ekundayo Opaleye(Balogun Erunmu Owu) and Chief Mrs. Jolaoluwa Opaleye.
Penpushing further reports that, on their separate remarks, they extolled the qualities of Owu women in taking care of their homes and wards, for which they must be encouraged and assisted to win the war against poverty.
