Owu kingdom acquires 3,000 hectares of farmland for food production to serve south-west
The Owu Kingdom of Egbaland has commenced process addressing food shortage in South-West of Nigeria, with the launch of Agrobusiness Service in 3,000 hectares of land situated in Awowo community, Ewekoro local government area of Ogun State.
Penpushing reports that the traditional ruler of the kingdom, Oba (Prof) Saka Matemilola disclosed this on Monday during a press conference ahead of the popular annual event known as Odun Omo Olowu, which is the beating heart of Owu cultural calendar.
The royal father accompanied by his two Oloris and other notable chiefs explained that towards this project known as Awowo Agrobusiness Service, the Ogun State Government has endorsed it with provision of the farmland
Penpushing further reports that Matemilola said there will be cooperators to oversee the project, in ensuring standard quality, stressing that every cooperators will be compel with the required standard in produce.
The royal father who disclosed that the formal launch is scheduled for Saturday, assured that tractors and other facilities to aid the project will be provided, adding that the farming is designed to cut across all sectors of agriculture
‘We are transforming agriculture. Our mission is to make Owu, the food basket of South-West. It will also create job opportunities, particularly for the youths. It will also encourage our youths to show interest in agriculture’, he stated
Penpushing also reports that the monarch said the theme for this year’s celebration is, ’Growth and Advancement’ stated that the palace will provide micro credit facility for women entrepreneurs, to aid and support their businesses.
The first-class traditional ruler added that within the last few months the kingdom had offered 300 resident health insurance, explaining that the idea was to ensure people do not suffer health care, emphasising that the target is 1,000 residents before end of the year
Penpushing reports that Matemilola said the Owu palace bankrolled the project with support number of the indigenes currently in diaspora, who he said are convinced about the transparency in the efforts to make life meaningful
‘Over the past year, we have not merely witnessed change, we have been its architects. Numerous seeds of change have been planted across our kingdom, from sustainable economic empowerment initiatives to formal and informal educational programme that connect our people to the global village’, Olowu stated
