
One person killed as building collapses in Onitsha
The collapse of two-storey building at Akpaka Government Reservation Area (GRA) 33, on Tuesday in Onitsha, Anambra state has claimed life of one person, with another person narrowly escaped death.
Penpushing reports that Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday in Awka, just as many attributing it to the activities of unprofessional builders and the use of substandard materials.
The police spokesperson, a superintendent of police, said the incident happened at about 9:00 a.m. as two people were rescued, adding that unfortunately one of the rescued victims was confirmed dead at the hospital

“Unfortunately, one of the recused victims was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty, while the other was stabilised and is responding to treatment. The remains of the deceased had since been deposited at the hospital for preservation and autopsy’, he said.
“Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and the command, in collaboration with emergency agencies, is making efforts to ensure no other persons remain trapped under the debris’, the police command said.
Penpushing further reports that Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has extended condolences to the deceased’s family, and assured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring safety while working with relevant agencies to prevent future occurrences.
