Ondo state government inaugurates ‘amotekun’, ready for operations

The Ondo State Government on Tuesday inaugurated the  State Security Network Agency, code-named Operation Amotekun, at a ceremony held  at Gani Fawehimi Arcade in Akure, the state capital

Penpushing reports that, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu who inaugurated the network while speaking pointed out that the community policing became necessary to curb all forms of insecurity in the state.

The Governor recalled that, six southwest Governors launched a security outfit, code-named “Operation Amotekun” on January 9, to defend the region against rising insecurity marked by indiscriminate killings, kidnappings, banditry and destruction of farmlands.

Penpushing further reports that, the launch is coming months after the bill setting up the security outfit was passed into law by the state House of Assembly and signed into law by the governor, while it is recalled that, after  its launch, the initiative triggered a controversy across the country as the  Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami described the initiative as illegal.

The South-West Governors, thereafter met the Attorney-General and both  parties agreed to give legal backing to the initiative but explained that it won’t  be a regional outfit as earlier conceived, but state-based.

Penpushing also reports that, the Governors in February met with Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu who agreed that the new initiative will be done in partnership with the police to deal with crime-related challenges.
