Olowu of Owu Kingdom kicks against traditional rulers without credible source of living

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom Oba Saka Matemilola has suggested that any prospective Prince aspiring for the seat of a traditional ruler without credible source of living should not be consider for the royal stool in the interest of the institution.

Penpushing reports that Matemilola gave the suggestion while speaking as a guest of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council monthly media chat held at Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, Abeokuta, the state capital.

The royal father declared that, this became important and necessary to avoid having misfits as royal father, lamenting that the characters of some traditional rulers in recent time ranging from landgrabbing among other vices have continued to dent the image of the institution.

Penpushing further reports that he pointed out that it has been discovered that some of the so-called monarchs have no source of income before attaining the exalted position, hence, in ascension to the throne engaged in series of criminal activities.

‘Any traditional ruler who has no source of living before ascending the throne, will go into corruption and other social vices, and this should not be allowed, while some of them who find their ways to the position through illegal means also end up in series of shady characters’, Matemilola stated.

Penpushing also reports that the monarch, emphasized that it is high time to change the face of Obaship for better, noting that those who are responsible for selection of traditional rulers have equally compromised which pave way for wrong choice to be on the throne

‘We need to get a mirror to ourselves and see wrong things for correction. Those who bought their way to become Oba are giving bad name to the traditional institution. I am particularly interested in defending our culture and tradition’, he declared

Penpushing reports that Matemilola called for training and retraining on ethics of Obaship, stressing that respect is reciprocal, explaining that any traditional ruler who lacks self-discipline and integrity cannot be respected, rather will become subject of mockery in society
