Ogun state government warns residents of likely flooding as rainfall Increases
The Ogun State Government has warned people living in flood-prone areas to prepare for possible flooding between September and November 2025, explaining that this follow weather reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
Penpushing reports that, the government explained that the first phase of flooding, which happened between March and July, was well managed, explaining that this was made possible by clearing blocked drainages, public awareness campaigns, and enforcement of environmental laws.
The statement added that residents were also praised for cooperating by avoiding dumping of refuse in waterways and trading on drainage paths, however, stated that the second phase of rainfall from mid-September to November will be heavier.
Penpushing further reports that the statement stated that forecasts show September will have the highest rainfall of about 204mm, followed by October with 190mm, before dropping to 93mm in November.
The statement said communities at risk include Iwopin, Ifaara, Oni, Makun, Ebute-Imobi, Tungeji Island, and areas around Ogun River such as Isheri, Warewa, Akute, and Abeokuta. Residents along ILO and Iju Rivers.
Penpushing also reports that the government warned residents of the areas to be careful adding that the situation could get worse due to tidal movements and controlled water releases from the Oyan Dam, which has reached a high-water level.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has, however, been placed on red alert to carry out possible evacuation. The Ministry of Environment is also working with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to control water release from the dam.
