Ogun state former first lady, Olufunso Amosun sponsors free lumpectomy surgeries for women

The former first lady of Ogun State Olufunso Amosun, on Tuesday sponsored free lumpectomy surgeries for 11 women under her Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) known as UPLIFT Development Foundation.
Penpushing reports that the surgeries took place at the theater of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, a gesture said to be part of her annual humanitarian programme to support breast cancer patients and promote women’s health
The beneficiaries were selected from the more than 600 women who participated in the Free Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening organised by the foundation on September 9, 2025, while 22 of those screened were found to have suspicious breast conditions, and after further investigations, 11 were confirmed to require surgery.
Penpushing further reports that Amosun while speaking during the exercise emphasized that the initiative was part of her foundation’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that women diagnosed during the foundation’s screenings receive full treatment at no cost.
“Whatever lump we find during our UPLIFT screening, we will bear the cost the histology, investigations, surgeries and follow-up medication. The patients do not pay anything’, Amosun added.
Penpushing also reports that she added that the lumpectomy programme, which has been held annually, is deliberately scheduled outside the October cancer-awareness month to allow women to benefit from multiple initiatives across the year.
The founder of the organisation while responding to questions on how the programme could reach rural women, encouraged others to emulate such philanthropic gestures.
“It’s impossible to attend to everyone, but if everybody does the little, they can from their own corner, collectively more people will be reached’, she said.
Penpushing reports that the consultant oral and artificial surgeon Dr. Stella Ogunmiyiwa who spoke on behalf of the surgical team, explained that lumpectomy refers to the removal of a breast lump and that the procedures were performed in collaboration with the Department of Surgery, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
“All investigations, including mammograms and hormonal tests where needed, will be paid for by Her Excellency. The lumps will also be sent for histology, and post-operative medications have been covered. The patients are not paying anything,” she said.
Penpushing further reports that a past president of the Medical Women Association, Ogun State Branch Dr. Olabisi Dedeke, commended Amosun for sustaining the initiative beyond her tenure as first lady, noting that early detection remains the most effective way to combat breast and cervical cancers.
“Many women are silently suffering from breast cancer. Early detection is the key, and that is what Her Excellency has continued to promote through these programmes’, Dedeke added.
Meanwhile, the free lumpectomy surgeries were conducted with the full support of the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, led by the Acting Medical Director, Dr. Ade Dino, while all investigations, surgeries, and medications for the 11 patients were fully funded by the UPLIFT Development Foundation.
