Ogun state commissioner of police seeks journalists support in fighting crimes
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu has called on the media to support his command in waging war against social vices, which include cultism, sexual abuse and kidnapping among others.
Penpushing reports that Alamutu made the appeal while speaking at a reception organized for him by the Halmond Entertainment, held on Tuesday at Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre Hall located in Oke-Ilewo area of Abeokuta.
The 36th Commissioner of Police in the state disclosed that as part of the command move to address the ugly development and the menace, he has commenced consultations with stakeholders which include traditional rulers and religious leaders among others.
Penpushing further reports that he charged journalists in proactive dissemination of news to help in curbing criminal activities, assuring that the command under his leadership will not fold its arms, in seeing criminals having their ways
The police boss reiterated his earlier offer to cultists in the state, to come out and voluntarily relinquish membership, assuring that they would be offered amnesty, and that a guideline to do that has been provided without prosecuting them
Penpushing also reports that he said this offer was applicable to those who might have genuinely make up their minds to do away with such illegal and criminal activities, warning that anybody caught after the period allocated for them will face full wrath of the law.
The Commissioner said, investigation, however, showed that some of them were lured and ignorantly join the cult, and after realizing the danger associated with it finds it difficult to pull out, which turned out bondage for them.
Penpushing reports that Alamutu while assessing criminal activities in the state, admitted that, no doubt there are challenges, but pointed out that from records across the country, Ogun State remained one of the safest states.
‘Ogun State as at today is one of the safest states in the country. I can say authoritatively from records available. That does not mean there are no challenges such as land grabbing, sexual abuses and cultism, but I have resolved with my officers and men to deal with the situation’, he stated
‘I want to bridge the gap between police and members of the society. Police is reflection of the society, not all police are bad. No community can survive without police and no enforcement agency can survive without the community’, Alamutu explained
