Ogun state assembly ammends anti-land grabbing bill

The Ogun State House of Assembly has amended the bills on the prohibition of forcible occuptation of landed properties, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other violence and other related offence (Amendment) Law, 2023 as well as  that of the State Legislative Funds Management (Amendment) Law, 2023.

Penpushing reports that the amendment process was made known at the plenary consequent upon the presentation of the committee reports by the Chairman, House Committee on Lands and Housing, Hon. Damilola Soneye and that of House Committee on Finance  and Appropriation by Hon. Musefiu Lamidi.

The  plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon.  Olakunle Oluomo at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta,  thereafter moved the motion  for the adoption of their  reports, seconded by Hon Oluseun Adesanya and Hon Damilola Soneye and consequently, the bills were later read  and adopted clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole.

Penpushing further reports that the motion for the third reading of the bills was moved by the Majority Leader Hon  Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader Hon Lukman Adeleye and Hon  Yusuf Amosun respectively, while the Clerk of the House/Head of Legislative Service, ‘Deji Adeyemo took the third reading of the bills before the lawmakers.

The Speaker while responding at the plenary session of the House of Assembly directed that the clean copies of the bills be transmitted to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

Penpushing also reportsthat in anotherdevelopment, the Speaker has announced that the Assembly had formally received the judgment nullifying the election of a member representing Ikenne State Constituency, Hon Babajide Owodunni, and as such he ceased to be a member,adding  that the Assembly was awaiting the issuance of Certificate of Return to the winner of the said judgement to be  sworn-in.

The  Speaker in the same vein enjoined all stakeholders in justice dispensation to be more proactive in ensuring  effective process of implementation of laws in the State to promote justice and rid the society of crimes and criminalities.

Penpushing reports that  Oluomo made the  submission, while reacting to the presentations of members representing Odeda and Ijebu-East State Constituencies, Honourables Oludaisi Elemide and Waliu Owode respectively, who lamented the cases of kidnapping recorded in their areas recently.

The Speaker stated that stakeholders including the  members of the public, security agents and political office holders had a role in ensuring the immediate  arrest and prosecution of criminals, while canvassing for vigorous sensitization by the media against kidnapping  and ritual  killings amongst  the youth and unscrupulous traditionalists,stressing  the need for the members of the public to avail security agencies with  necessary intelligence to track criminals.
