OGUN JUDICIARY DEMANDS GOVERNOR’S ASSENT TO AMMENDED CHILD RIGHT LAW

The Judge in her opening remark noted that, the theme was apt, timely and appropriate in this modern day, Nigeria, adding that the judges can attest to the fact that, the number of rape cases and divorce are very high in the society.

‘The unfortunate aspect is that the issue of rape is so rampant now and the victims are children. This is quite disheartening and very disturbing. It is a reflection of the society, it is not peculiar to Ogun State or Nigeria, it is global menace’, she stated.

Penpushing further reports that, the Chief Judge called on all parents and guardians to give adequate time and good care for their children, to train them and allow communication to flow between them and the children.

The judiciary boss said, this would help to curb the menace, instead of the children to keep silent and endure in silence, emphasisng that,’ I will also push for the assent of the amended Child Rights Law by the Governor’.

‘The former administration could not assent to it, but we will implore the State Governor to assent to the Amended Child Right Law, it would help to dispense justice promptly in rape cases and also it will help the family court’, Dipeolu said

Penpushing also reports that, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA),Emmanuel Olu-Alade earlier in his welcome address, noted that, the theme was important because of the menace, stressing that, ‘it is beyond any dispute  that sexual abuse of children in Nigeria today is at an alarming rate’

‘From father, uncles, brothers, neighbours, spiritual leaders and our traditional institutions. Today our female children can no longer comfortably walk around without being molested and the effect of this is turning Nigeria into a failed state’, he lamented.

The Chairman appealed to the Ogun State Government to ensure that judiciary is well and properly funded so that, the state will maintain an image that allows open and accessible doors to justice, adding that access to right is access to justice.

‘The era of making our judicial officers beg like beggars (Babia la) must come to an abrupt end now. The era of our head of court begging the executive arm of government for survival must end. The principle of separation of powers must be allowed to flourish. I say boldy that you cannot fight corruption with poorly paid people’,Olu-Alade said
