Egba monarchs kick against suspension extension of colleague monarch, Taofeek Owolabi

The Alakija of Ikija Egbaland, Oba Babatunde Ayorinde has faulted indefinite suspension hammered on his colleague, Olu of Obafemi, Oba Taofeek Owolabi and subsequent appointment of regency council by Egba Traditional Council to oversee the town.

Penpushing reports that in same vein traditional ruler of Agbado, Oba Adedayo Shyllon Sogbulu faulted decision of the Egba Traditional Council on the extended suspension declaring the said suspension extension was a ruse, adding that nothing of such was discussed at the meeting.

The two traditional rulers who took same position of the said indefinite suspension declared that the action by the Egba Traditional Council was illegal and constitution that should be disregard by members of the public

Penpushing further reports that Ayorinde while kicking against the indefinite suspension in a statement recalled that there was a previous meeting which suspended Owolabi for six months which lapsed in June, 2025.

The monarch argued that the latest extension of the suspension which the traditional council now declared as indefinite, was uncalled for, unconstitutional and illegal, stressing that there was never at a meeting it was resolved to extend the suspension order

‘There was a meeting that initially suspended Olu Obafe, for ethical conduct for six months by the Egba Traditional Council, upon the report of the ethics committee of the council headed by the Olowu of Owu Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola at our meeting of December, 2024. The Olu Obafe was suspended for six months, and this suspension elapsed in June 2025’, he wrote.

‘Upon Olu Obafe’s return in June 2025, his matter was never discussed at the statutory monthly meeting of our council held in June 2025, of which Olu Obafe himself was present at the meeting’, he added.

Penpushing also reports that Alakija who provided document to buttress his claim, emphasized that the laws Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021 as amended do not make provisions for indefinite suspension nor the appointment of regents.

The monarch’s argument was based on a letter of suspension addressed to the embattled royal father said to have been enmeshed in land grabbing matter, was dated June 17, 2025, explaining that it was due to the monarch’s ongoing court proceeding.

Penpushing reports Alagbado in his own submission emphasised nothing of such was discussed at the meeting where the affected monarch was also in attendance, stressing the pronouncement of indefinite suspension must be baseless

“Nothing of such was ever discussed at our last meeting and the Oba himself came to our last meeting, the issue was not raised nor discussed. More so,traditional xouncil has no power to suspend any Oba indefinitely’, he said.

The monarch equally kicked against regency said to have been put in place arguing that ,there is no provision for a regency council in the chiefs law of Ogun State

“It is also very clear in the chiefs law that no Oba should exercise power/s beyond his local government and indeed his area of prescribed authority. The above law attracts two years jail term”, Alagbado emphasised

Penpushing further reports that he declared that the Ogboni Chiefs are not recognized and known to any law in Ogun State, explaining that there is a circular from the State Government to traditional councils forbidden Ogboni Chiefs from interferring in installation of Baales, talkless of serving as regents to a recognized Oba’s stool of first class status that has cabinet in his town even if the suspension continues

The Alagbado who provided documents to support his claim stressed that the whole action is again based on unilateral decision not from the Egba Traditional Council as it was never discussed nor approved in any of the meetings, and called on subjects and general public to disregard

Penpushing also reports that a memo signed by Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland,Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland is titled ‘Indefinite Suspension’, announced the new twist on embattled monarch

‘On 13th December, 2024 Egba Traditional Council suspended you in line with section 36 (1) and (2) of Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021 for land grabbing activity in Agboro Olatunde Community of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area for which you were charged to Court by Ogun State Government. In view of the ongoing Court proceedings, your suspension is hereby extended indefinitely from 13th June 2025 till the end of the court case against you”, the letter reads

Penpushing reports the letter added that in view of the development the council appointed a five-man Regency Council to oversee the affairs of the town, which include Chief Oluwafemi Folarin, the Odofin of Ijeun as the Chairman.

The letter added that other members of the regency are Chief Afolabi Michael Fasanu (SAN) – Lisa Ijeun, Chief Micheal Sokenu – Sakosi Ijeun, Chief Sunday Oduntan – Baamofin of Ijeun, and Chief (Mrs.) Victoria Adunni Adeboye – Olori Erelu Ijeun.

Penpushing reports that the memo explained that the appointments follows recommendations from the Oluwo of Ijeun, Chief Edmund Adeboye, Chief Akanbi Usman, the Balogun Ijeun, Chief Simeon Ogunwale, the Baase of Ijeun and Dr Chief Fatai Badru, the Jagunna of Ijeun; and the approval by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Egba Traditional Council through its President, Alake of Egbaland.

Meanwhile, the memo emphasised that the appointees possess the wisdom, integrity and leadership skills necessary to serve our township with distinction
