Nigerian university professor kidnapped

A lecturer in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu State, Professor Oguejiofor Ujam and an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have been kidnapped by gunmen along Opi-Nsukka- Ugwogo-Nike Road.

Penpushing reports that the family of the Professor, who is the dean of School of General Studies of the university, said the kidnappers as at the time of filing this report had contacted them for ransom, adding that the incident occurred on Sunday when the victims were returning to Nsukka from Enugu metropolis.

The Public Relations Officer of the University, Okwun Omeaku, when contacted on Tuesday refused to either deny or clearly confirm the incident, arguing that blowing up the kidnap in the media could jeopardise the professor’s chances of being released, stressing that matters relating to kidnap and all that are being handled by the state security, and not by university authorities

Penpushing further reports that the Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe when reached out to on Tuesday explained that he should be given time to speak on the incident

The police spokesperson who is a Deputy Superintendent of Police pleaded for patience with assurance that he would respond, but hours after, and as at the time of filing this report was yet to come out with any clue

Penpushing also reports that no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnap of the university don and the road safety official, while a separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) has been blamed for the frequent attacks in the region.
