Nigerian senator, wife arrested in London over alleged organ harvesting

The Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu have been arrested by the London Metropolitan Police and charged for conspiracy to traffic a child to the United Kingdom in order to harvest organs

Penpushing reports that, the enforcement said on Thursday that the charges followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team and gave some details of the accused as follows: [A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

The details also have it that, Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting, adding that the  investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022,”

Penpushing further reports that, the police said the couple have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, adding that as criminal proceedings are now underway the authorities will not be providing further details

The Metropolitan Police as at the time of filing this report did not state the gender of the child, but explained that a child has been safeguarded and while the authorities are working closely with partners on continued support

Penpushing also reports that, as at the time of filing this report, the former Deputy Senate President spokesperson, Uche Anichukwu, was yet to make any official statement or reactions over the development
