Nigerian lawmaker suspended ‘indefinitely’ over alleged assault on wife

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Ovat Agbor, representing Obubra I Constituency, has been suspended indefinitely over alleged violent conduct against his wife.

Penpushing reports that the spokesperson to the speaker of the assembly, Matthew Okachie communicating the decision to the lawmakers in a statement explained that the decision to suspend Agbor, followed allegations that he physically assaulted his wife.

The statement, stated that the decision was reached during plenary after a motion moved by Hon Davies Etta and seconded by Hon Francis Asuquo, adding that the assembly strongly condemned the alleged behaviour, describing it as inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of lawmakers.

Penpushing further reports that the statement explained that after deliberations, the House of Assembly resolved that  Agbor be placed on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities, adding that the assembly approved the constitution of a committee to investigate the matter and report its findings for further legislative action.

The lawmaker following the suspended  resolution, was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, while the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem, said the House remains committed to discipline and integrity.

Penpushing also reports that the Speaker emphasized that lawmakers must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust reposed in them by the people, however, the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the committee’s investigation.

The Cross River State Police Command , Eitokpah Sunday, as at the time of filing this report  declined to comment on the allegation, stating that  he can only comment on cases under the command’s investigation.

The suspended lawmaker, in same vein, was yet to respond to the development as at the time of this report , while a video of a woman with a battered face, said to be that of the victim, has been circulating on Facebook, which triggered public outcry with many at the comment section questioning if the lawmaker wanted to blind his wife’s eyes.
