NIGERIA GOVERNMENT RENAMES ABUJA STADIUM AFTER ABIOLA

The President in his speech recalled he had earlier declared June 12, the day the election held, as Nigeria’s democracy day, while Wednesday was the first time the celebration happened on June 12 since  1999, when democracy day was celebrated on May 29.

Penpushing further reports that  Abiola won the June 12,1993 Presidential election, which was annulled by the then Military Government headed by Ibrahim Babangida, but Abiola was later arrested by another Military Dictator, late Sanni Abacha for declaring himself President Nigeria, ironically Abiola died in custody after some years.

However, in 2018, President Muhammed Buhari recognized Abiola’s mandate and conferred on him the country’s highest National Honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, reserved only for Presidents.

Penpushing also reports that, the June 12 Wednesday celebration held at the Eagles Square was attended by other foreign leaders, including the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame among other dignitaries.
