Abeokuta Club hosts Pioneer Vice Chancellor Federal University of Medicine Medical Sciences, pledges firm support

The Premier Club of the Egbas, Abeokuta Club located along Presidential Boulevard in Abeokuta, on Friday hosted the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences (FUMMSA), Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.

Penpushing reports that the Vice Chancellor, Prof Fatiu Arogundade and his entourage were received by members of the club led by the Acting President, Alhaji Nurudeen Oyedele at about 5pm and later retired into the office of the chairman for the interaction session with the visiting Vice Chancellor.

The Acting President in his welcome address said the establishment of the university by the Nigerian government was a well-deserved gift for the Egbas and Ogun State general, stating that a conducive atmosphere is on ground to operate without hindrance

‘This gift from the federal government is well deserved and appreciated. We assure you of our firm support at all times to give this special medical tertiary institution the enabling environment to operate without hindrance from all corners’, he stated

Penpushing further reports that Oyedele explained that the club is a movement that initiate special monitoring and implementation committees at virtually all stages in conjunction with other relevant bodies and individuals.

‘Mr Vice Chancellor, we want to assure you of the preparedness of the entire Egbas to see this institution as our own, as it was the case with older federal government institutions sited within Egbaland’, Oyedele added

‘We shall stand by the university with the network support of Egbas at home and in diaspora, in the quest to attain the desired height in the comity of medical tertiary institutions across the world’, he emphasized

Penpushing also reports that the club boss expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government for timely intervention through which virtually all educational, agricultural, medical/health institutions among others reach Egbaland.

‘I wish to emphasise that Abeokuta Club will be willing to partner with the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta with a view to moving the university forward to attain its desired goals. We hope you will not hesitate to avail us of this optic’, he said

Penpushing reports that the Acting Life President of the Club, Prof Afolabi Soyode in his remarks gave historic background of the establishment of the club, which he said to harmose the four sections of Egbaland.

The Acting Life President added that others include to socialize, promote development of Egbas in all areas covering all local government within its jurisdiction, stating that the club has developed to a movement to cover all phases

Penpushing further reports that the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB), Abeokuta, Prof Olusola Kehinde, a member of the club appreciated opportunity offered him to speak at the event.

The university boss disclosed that Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB) has offered part of the campus to be used as starting point for academic operations of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences.

Penpushing also reports that Kehinde added that Federal University of Agriculture will be a sister university for the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, expressing optimism that the newly established university has come to stay

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in his response said he was honoured to have been granted a courtesy visit by the club, and gave brief background of the establishment of the university.

Penpushing reports that Arogundade promised to collaborate with the club to move the university forward, as he equally admitted the support of the Federal University of Agriculture with the provision of academic facilities for take-off of the university

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university will take off with twenty courses/programmes before the end of the year, explaining that management had applied to National Universities Commission (NUC) for courses accreditation

Penpushing reports that he disclosed that Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun as part of his administration towards successful take off of the university has approved one of the state government model schools, located in Oniganjangan to serve as temporary Senate building

The Vice Chancellor, however, pointed out that lot of funds will be needed to build permanent site for the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, and passionately called on the club, individuals and corporate bodies to support the project.

Penpushing further reports that other members of the club who engaged the Vice Chancellor and his team include Dr Taiwo Sogunle (2nd Vice President), Prof Akeem Oyekanmi(General Secretary) and Alhaji Kameldeen Adedo (Chairman Management Committee)

The others are Prof Afolabi Soyode(Acting Life President), Chief Adeniyi Lasaki (Past President), Engr Niyi Abiola (Elder of the Club), Chief Festus Kehinde (Chairman Social Committee), Prof Olusola Kehinde (Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture) and Chief Sola Otesile(Assistant General Secretary)

Penpushing also reports that on the entourage of the the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences include Dr Abayomi Olukayode Gregory (Registrar) and Dr (Mrs) Idayat Agboola (Libarian)
