Lockdown: Ogun state traffic agency apprehends 345 traffic offenders

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, has apprehended 345 road traffic offenders throughout the state during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown ordered by the Federal and Ogun State Governments.

 Penpushing reports that,the Director Traffic Planning, Research and Statistics Cdr Ajayi Michael Babatunde made this known in a statement on Tuesday, adding that 77 motor vehicles and 268 motorcycles were also apprehended for various offences.

The Director explained that the offences include disobedience to stay at home order, overloading of vehicles and motorcycles, excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving against traffic, non-usage of seat belt and crash helmets, calling and texting while driving and so on.

 The statement also added that the agency turned back a total of 972 vehicles at various border towns in Ogun State during the ongoing lockdown, a total number of 41 road traffic crashes involving 15 private cars, 11 private buses, 18 commercial cars, 2 motorcycles, 12 commercial buses, 4 medium trucks and 5 heavy trucks were recorded.

‘Out of the reported 41 cases, 8 of them were fatal crashes, 20 serious crashes while the remaining 13 were minor crashes. During the period 212 persons were involved in road traffic crashes, out of which 44 persons (30 males, 14 females) sustained various degrees of injuries, 11persons(10adult males, 1 female child) killed and 157 persons were rescued unhurt due to prompt response to 26 emergency calls received by TRACE Corps’, he said.

The statement explained that, 46.31% of the road traffic crashes was caused by excessive speed, 24.40% by dangerous driving, 8.64% by bad tyres, 7.28% by driving against traffic and 13.37% by other causes.

‘Our resolve to reduce deaths and injuries on all roads in Ogun State is being pursued vigorously and relentlessly such that no traffic offender shall go unpunished’, he declared.

Penpushing further reports that,the statement said, the Corps Commander appreciates the unflinching support of the Traffic Whistle Blowers throughout the State for their ever prompt information whenever there is any crash on our roads.

‘TRACE Corps is hereby appealing to the motoring public to obey all traffic rules as well as stay at home order and remember that safety is the responsibility of all road users’.
