Lagos residents protest over lockdown, accused government of bias in enforcement order

The youths in Eleko community, Ibeju-Lekki local government area of Lagos State on Monday embarked on a protest over alleged bias in enforcing the coronavirus lockdown in the community.

Penpushing reports, that the protest which turned bloody resulted in five police officers sustaining injuries, following face off between the police and the youths in the community, but 51 of the protesters were later arrested.

The protesters alleged that while residents and other company workers in the community were forced to stay in their houses, expatriates working with Dangote Refinery were allowed to go to their places of work.

Penpushing further reports that,  the aggrieved protesters burnt tyres on the streets to express their grievances over the alleged bias, but the protest went bloody following the arrival of police officers, as the protesters resisted “intimidation.”

The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the ugly development disclosing that, 51 protesters were arrested, following police reinforcement, adding that as at the time of filing this report the protesters had been dispersed and normalcy restored in the community.

Penpushing also reports that, Elkama disclosed that the protesters injured five police officers and vandalised two outposts, while the military have also been deployed to help maintain normalcy in Eleko, Ibeju-Lekki.
