The political atmosphere in Ogun State has taken a new and interesting turn with the entrance of Senator Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo into the gubernatorial race.

Her declaration of interest has altered the political calculations across the state, with many observers describing her move as a strategic masterstroke capable of redefining the contest.

Until her emergence, some of the presumed front runners appeared comfortable in the political space, basking in what many analysts now consider perceived or manufactured popularity, supported largely by controlled narratives and induced followership.

However, the entry of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo into the race has disrupted that comfort zone and injected a fresh layer of seriousness into the political conversation.

As the daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is no stranger to public life or governance. Yet beyond the legacy of her famous father, she has carved her own identity through years of public service and political engagement.

Her first major appointment in Ogun State government came when she served as Commissioner for Health during the administration of Gbenga Daniel. Her political trajectory later took her to the National Assembly where she served as Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District. In the Senate, she distinguished herself through legislative contributions, constituency projects, and empowerment initiatives targeted at improving the living conditions of her people. Her record includes sponsored bills, community development programmes, and support schemes designed to uplift vulnerable groups.

Beyond formal political office, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has continued to build a reputation as a grassroots oriented politician. Those who have interacted with her often speak of her simplicity, accessibility, and willingness to engage with ordinary citizens

Ogun State has long been recognized as a land of pioneers and progressive thinkers, producing trailblazers in education, governance, business, and public service. Women from the state have also distinguished themselves in several sectors, contributing significantly to national development.

It is therefore not entirely surprising that conversations are now emerging around the possibility of Ogun State producing Nigeria’s first elected female governor. Should this become a reality, it would represent a major milestone not only for the state but also for the broader movement advocating greater political participation for women in Nigeria

As the political season gradually unfolds, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the entry of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo into the race has reshaped the political equation in Ogun State.

This momentum will ultimately translate into electoral victory as her presence has certainly added a new and compelling chapter to the evolving story of Ogun State politics.
