25-year-old labourer confirmed dead as building foundation collapses in Abuja
A building foundation wall at the premises of Radio House, Area 8, Garki, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has collapsed on Monday at around 5pm, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old labourer.
Penpushing reports that Head of Public Affairs, Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, Nkechi Isa confirmed this on Tuesday in a statement, which added that two workers were trapped after the wall gave way while they were excavating about seven feet underground in the building.
The Acting Director Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter Abdulrahman Mohammed reacting to the collapse at an excavation site called for strict adherence to safety regulations at construction sites to avoid similar unfortunate incidents.
Penpushing further reports that Mohammed emphasized that the importance of professionals in the building sector and urged developers to shun quacks, as well as calling on residents to always call the 112-emergency toll-free number in case of any disaster.
