Iyabo Obasanjo calls on ogun state indigenes to embrace unity ahead of 2027 poll
The governorship aspirant under the platform of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has called on the people of Ogun State to embrace unity, industry, and collective responsibility as the state marks over five decades since its creation.
Penpushing reports that Obasanjo made the call while reflecting on the five decades of creation of the state pointing out that the state was established by bringing together several proud Yoruba sub-groups, including the Egbas, Ijebus, Remos, Yewas, Aworis, Eguns, and Ketus, among others.
The former Commissioner of Health emphasized that beyond its indigenous roots, Ogun State has also become home to Nigerians from other ethnic backgrounds, particularly Igbos and Hausas, who settled through trade and commerce and have contributed significantly to its growth and development.
Penpushing further reports that she explained that the name “Ogun” carries deep cultural and symbolic meanings in Yoruba heritage, explaining that “Ogun” represents sweat, “Ogun” represents war, “Ogun” represents inheritance, “Ogun” represents the revered Yoruba god of iron and steel, and “Ogun” also represents medicine.
The governorship hopeful in the forthcoming 2027 general elections added that it is from this rich cultural identity that the Ogun River derives its name, reflecting strength, resilience, and continuity.
Penpushing also reports that Obasanjo drawing on these meanings, urged citizens to reinterpret “war” not as conflict, but as a determined struggle against poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment.

Penpushing reports that she added that the true “medicine” Ogun State requires today is strategic economic development, industrial growth, innovation, and youth empowerment.
The party aspirant stressed that through collective effort and purposeful leadership, the state can cure the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment while safeguarding its inheritance for future generations.
Penpushing further reports that she, reaffirmed her commitment to the progress and advancement of Ogun State, and described herself underscoring her deep cultural roots and dedication to service.
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized on need for all sons and daughters of Ogun State at home and in the diaspora to unite beyond ethnic and political divides, harness.
Penpushing also reports that she stated that their collective strengths, and work together to position Ogun State as a beacon of industrial excellence, cultural pride, and sustainable development in Nigeria is necessary.
