I feel guilty about conviction of my parents, says Ekweremadu’s daughter

The daughter of the jailed couple Mrs and Mrs Ike Ekweremadu, Sonia Ekweremadu, said she felt guilty about the conviction of her parents, adding that it was regrettable that the calamity fell on them because of her own medical plight.

Penpushing reports that she said this during an interview and equally begged her parents, stressing that it has been hard for her to wrap her head around the conviction, pointing out that she understood  why her parents were convicted, but disagreed with it albeit from a very biased perspective as their daughter.

‘I feel guilty, I feel like all this has happened because of me. I would like to use this opportunity to apologise to them for the way everything has played out. I will obviously always back my parents. However, the law has taken its course and we just have to now move forward as a family”, she said

Penpushing further reports that the daughter of former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, who is still undergoing dialysis said she feels nothing towards David Nwamini who was to donate kidney to her and wishes him the best.

The lady explained that her family could not get a donor from within the family because of their own history of kidney conditions which led to searching for one outside, stating that she had no involvement in the search and settlement for David Nwamini (Ukpo), who was trafficked to the London to donate his kidney to her, as her family handled everything.

Penpushing also reports that she said her experience has allowed her to understand how dynamic life is and has also given her a new vision to help specifically people with kidney conditions to show that they do not need to be scared.

The Nigerian Senator it is recalled was on Friday sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison by the United Kingdom court having been found guilty of organ harvest crime, while his wife. Beatrice, also bagged four years and six months, and a Medical practitioner who allegedly colluded with them, Dr Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Penpushing further reports that the couple allegedly procured a 21-year-old Nigerian and flew him to London with the intention to harvest his kidney for their sick daughter, while the judge, Justice Johnson in pronouncing the sentence described the Nigerian politician as the driving force of the crime

The judge during a televised sentence hearing said he took into consideration a 51-page document pleading for leniency for Ekweremadu and highlighting how he is a person of upstanding character, while it is also recalled that the former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in a letter to the United Kingdom authorities and Nigerian parliament among others, it is recalled, had earlier pleaded for leniency for the couple.

Penpushing also reports that the lady is suffering from a health condition called Nephrotic Syndrome, where the kidney does not function properly, while her survival depends on continuous dialysis for the rest of her life or a kidney transplant which she hopes to get soon.

Meanwhile, sources in United Kingdom said the victim of the failed transplant may not return to Nigeria following his attorney’s statement about being scared for his life, and may be granted asylum, should his lawyer make a case.
