Hushipuppi fraud saga: Inspector General of Police recommends suspension of Abba Kyari
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has recommended the immediate suspension of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, following his alleged involvement in multi-million dollar fraud charges by the United States America (USA) government.
Penpushing reports that, the Deputy Commissioner of Police was indicted by the American government, as part of the investigation of the fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly called Hushipuppi, who has pleaded guilty to the fraud.
The highly celebrated and decorated Nigerian police officer was named among the beneficiaries of proceeds from Hushipuppi’s’ illegal dealings, and the American government ordered his arrest and prosecution.
Penpushing further reports that, the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba in a statement said the suspension of Kyari was pending the outcome of an internal investigation into his connection with the Hushipuppi, the internet fraudster.
The suspension order was made known in a statement on Sunday with reference number CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.4/26., and this is coming two days after the Inspector General of Police ordered an internal review of the allegations against Kyari.
Penpushing also reports that, the suspension letter issued by the Police Service Commission (PSC), dated July 31, emphasized that the suspension of Kyari was in line with the interdisciplinary processes of the force.
“The IGP further noted that the suspension is also expected to create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against DCP Abba Kyari without interference. The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer,” the statement said.
Penpushing reports that, the police spokesman in the statement disclosed that a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) comprising four senior police officers, to be chaired by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike, has been set up to investigate the allegations levelled against the Kyari.
“The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against DCP Abba Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed of the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’,Mba said.
“The SIP is also to obtain detailed representation of DCP Abba Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force Leadership on the matter,” he added.
