HERALD NEWSPAPERS WORKERS PROTEST OVER POOR WORKING CONDITIONS
The protesters under the aegis of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products’ Workers (NUPPPPROW), also frowned at the poor condition of their offices, the entire vicinity in which the media outfit is located as well as non-payment of accumulated allowances.
Penpushing further reports that, the protesters shut down the gate leading to the premises of the newspaper house in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital. It is on record that, The Herald is one of the oldest State Newspapers in the country.
The Chairman of National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products’ Workers (NUPPPPROW) Abdulrasaq Ahmed, while speaking with journalists said the workers were protesting bad working environment and dilapidated state of infrastructure in the outfit.
Penpushing also reports that, Ahmed explained that staff have had to contend with the poor working condition for almost nine years without any hope in sight, adding that the staff used to take refuge under the tree because of the unbearable nature of their offices.
The union leader also decried the epileptic production of the newspaper, which used to be on the newsstand four times in a week, but now struggling to come out once in a week, lamenting that the situation had rendered several able staff redundant.
Penpushing reports, while addressing the protesting workers the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mohammed Sabi, appealed to them on need to be calm, with a pledge to table their grievances before Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, and commended them for being civil and law-abiding in their agitation.
