Gunmen set police station ablaze, free inmates

Gunmen have attacked and set ablaze Bende Divisional Police Station in Abia State and also shot two operatives, thereafter set free criminal suspects who were detained at the station

Penpushing reports that, a witness said the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 10.45p.m, adding that sporadic gunshot forced residents out and were scampering for safety

“We heard a cacophony of gunshots around 10.45p.m. and when we rushed outside, we saw the station on fire. At that point, it dawned on us that the station was under attack so everybody began to scamper for safety,” the witness said.

Penpushing further reports that, the Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Ogbonna, confirmed the attack on Thursday, adding that two operatives were shot in the leg and that the attackers also burnt down the generator house and a multi-purpose building belonging to Bende Local Government Council.

The Superintendent of police, disclosed that said the attackers later released criminal suspects who were detained at the station, stressing that as at the time of filing this report it was not clear how the gunmen arrived at the place.

“They also burnt two vehicles, including the Divisional Police Officer’s Highlander Jeep, and three motorcycles, parked at the station. We do not know yet how they all gathered to execute the attack at the station.May be they parked their vehicles away from their target and walked through footpaths to the place,” he said.

Penpushing also reports that, the police spokesman said investigation has commenced on the shocking development, which occurred at the station which  is located at the main entrance to Bende council headquarters, as well as similar attacks  in different parts of the state.
