Gunmen release deputy vice-chancellor after eleven days in captivity
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, Prof Godwin Emezue who was abducted on January 26, 2024 from a petrol station at Umuekwule, Amachara, a community in Umuahia South Local Government Area of the State has regained freedom after 11 days in captivity.
Penpushing reports that it is recalled that Emelue, was said to have driven into the station alongside his wife to refuel their vehicle when the gunmen attacked them, and thereafter dragged him into their waiting Lexus SUV, collected his wife’s ATM card and zoomed off.
The gunmen were said to have released the Deputy Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday night after payment of N25 million as ransom to the hoodlums, a release said to have been announced on the institution’s staff WhatsApp platform on Wednesday morning.
Penpushing further reports that a lecturer in the university who confirmed the release of the victim, but does not want his name in print was, however, silence on the information about the payment of ransom if given or not.
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Chijioke Nwogu, when contacted confirmed the development, stressing that security issues should be left for security officials, adding that all what he knew was that the victim had been released
Penpushing also reports that the Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka, as at the time of filing this report was yet to issue any official statement on the development
