Gunmen open fire on mourners at funeral ceremony

Gunmen suspected to be cultists on Saturday opened fire on mourners at Ebenebe community in Awka North Local Government Area, of Anambra State, a development which disrupted a funeral ceremony.

Penpushing reports a source disclosed that the man whose funeral was being held was killed at Amansea community of the local government sometime in December by suspected cultists, and during the service at his residence the gunmen launched the attack

The source added that, some mourners were hit by bullets, and rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital at Amaku, Awka, where they were said to be receiving treatment as at the time of press.

“It was during the lying-in-state at the residence of the deceased that the suspected cultists arrived at the scene and started shooting at mourners. My brother is among those injured and we have been at the hospital since 11 a.m. trying to ensure that they stabilise him,” the source said.

Penpushing further reports that, the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, adding that as at the time of filing this report, he could not ascertain number of casualties.

‘A burial was going on when some people suspected to be cultists invaded the area and started shooting. I do not have details of casualties now, but I will keep you informed once the picture becomes clear,” he said.
