Gunmen kidnap Catholic priest in Anambra state
Gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest Basil Chukwuemeka at Eke Nkpor by Obosi Bypass in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, an incident reported to have occurred on Wednesday morning.
Penpushing reports that the Chancellor, Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, Priest Prudentius Aroh, made this known in a statement explaining that the victim is a priest in residence at Holy Trinity Parish, Ogidi, another community in the council area.
‘The Chancellor in the statement lamented that as at the time of filing this report the abductors have not established any contact with anybody, stressing that the Bishop of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese, Valerian Okeke, has called for intensified prayers among the Catholic faithful for the safe release of the cleric.
Penpushing further reports that the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, had addressed other Catholic priests on the development in the Bishop Conference at Onitsha.
The police spokesperson a Superintendent of Police, said the command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and possible rescue of the victim, emphasizing that the commissioner has assured the leadership of the church that the police in the state would do everything to rescue the priest unhurt and arrest the kidnappers.
“Anambra Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and possible rescue of Reverend Fr. Basil Chukwuemeka, which sad incident occurred at Nkpor Junction, Onitsha. The Command is already working with some eyewitnesses of the incident in the ongoing operation’, he added.
